Chetan Sharma of India created history when he became the first cricketer ever to claim a hat-trick in world cup cricket. He achieved this wonderful feat in a World Cup group stage match (ODI) played between India and New Zealand at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground, Nagpur on 31st October, 1987.

Batting first New Zealand were struggling at 182 for 5, when Chetan Sharma decided that he was going to engrave his name in the history books. He removed Ken Rutherford, Ian Smith and Ewen Chatfield off consecutive deliveries and left New Zealand found reeling at 182 for 8. They however did manage to put up 221 runs on board. India easily chased down the target in 32.1 overs for the loss of just one wicket. Sunil Gavaskar top scored for India with 103 runs and remained not out till the end.

The man of the match award was shared by Gavaskar and Chetan Sharma.
