First Bowler To Claim A 5 Wicket Haul In Test Cricket

William Evans Midwinter of Australia is the first bowler to claim a 5 wicket haul in Test Cricket.

Midwinter took 5 wickets for 78 runs, in cricket's first official Test, played between Australia and England during 15 - 19 March, 1877 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Australia won the match by 45 runs.

It would be interesting to note that Alfred Shaw of England also claimed 5 wickets in the same match.

Australia won the toss and elected to bat first. Charles Bannerman, struck the first test century helping Australia put up 245 runs in their first innings. England in their first innings were bundled out for 196 runs, thanks to a spirited bowling performance by Midwinter; claiming 5 English wickets. 

Australia in their second innings could score only 104 runs, with Alfred Shaw of England taking 5 wickets. England chasing a target of 154 runs to win, could manage only 108 runs in the second innings and Australia won the match by 45 runs.
