Who Scored The First Double Century In Test Cricket?

William Lloyd Murdoch or Billy Murdoch of Australia became the first cricketer to score a double century (200 runs) in test cricket when he hit 211 runs during the 1st innings of the match played against England at the Kennington Oval, London between 11 - 13 August, 1884.

Brief Match Stats: Batting first Australia put up a mammoth 551 runs on board thanks to a double century by Murdoch and centuries each by Percy McDonnell and Tup Scott. England in their first innings, boosted by a century by Walter Read (who came in to bat at the No. 10 spot) managed to put up 346 runs on board. 

Following on, England ended the third and final day at 85 for 2 and the match ended in a draw.
